The 1987 Opel GT reappears at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show

Opel will present three incredible models worldwide at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt this year, which will be open to the public from September 12 to 22. First, the new Astra with high efficiency engines, secondly the Grandland X Hybrid4 with all-wheel drive, and finally, the new and expected sixth-generation Corsa electric. In addition, the German firm will exhibit in Frankfurt the new Corsa-e Rally, the world's first rally-free car. However, the IAA will have a very special guest, a Corsa GT manufactured in 1987.

Opel has not been able to resist and has driven this classic from his last home in Portugal to the Opel Classic workshop in Rüsselsheim and from there to the IAA in Frankfurt.

Between April 1985 and autumn 1987, Opel offered the GT finish. This model that was the successor of the Corsa SR, equips a 1.3-liter carburetor engine and 70 horsepower. All the high technology that this model could offer at the time was a five-speed manual gearbox, to reduce consumption and rpm on longer trips.

The instrument panel did not have superfluous information, it only included the usual dials, a revolution counter and an oil pressure gauge. As for its fuel consumption, it coincides with the official figures of the time, so almost never consumed more than six liters per 100 kilometers.

It took a while for Opel Classic to find a first-generation Corsa GT, although in the end it found it. The specimen that will travel to the IAA, originally registered in Spain, was forgotten in a garage in Portugal, so the trip to Frankfurt for this small and modest Gran Turismo starts from a parking lot in the port of Porto.

On the road from Portugal to Rüsselsheim, the Opel GT made a stop in Zaragoza, where it was manufactured in 1987, and even had the opportunity to visit the production plant where it was born. Then, on his journey eastward, he passed through Barcelona, crossed France and from Basel traveled along the Rhine, until he reached Germany. In total, the 32-year-old Corsa GT traveled 2,700 kilometers and did not require repairs for its long road trip.

Despite the passage of time, the old yellow Corsa is still in good condition. However, when faced with the thorough examination of the Opel Classic experts, numerous imperfections came to light: roof dents, non-original badges, some scratched glass, worn seat benches, horn faults, etc. Therefore, the car finally dismounted completely.

To leave the Corsa GT as new, Opel Classic created the 2019 IAA Project, under the leadership of Thorsten Götz and Dieter Eder. First, the reconditioned engine was rebuilt, followed by suspension, shock absorbers and springs. Next, the bodywork was painted and received the correct GT badges. Then, the original light alloy wheels were mounted, and to finish, the new windows were installed, thanks to a friendly Opel distributor that had them in stock.

At the 68th edition of the IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show, visitors can visit the Opel Stand to admire the newly restored Corsa GT.
